Sydney Light Rail Dec/Jan Update 2016/17
Market Street and Pitt Street closure for Boxing Day Sales – 26 December 2016
- To manage the large number of shoppers, Market Street will progressively close to general traffic between Elizabeth and York Streets from 1am to 11pm on Boxing Day.
- Pitt Street will be closed north of the Hilton Hotel driveway and changed to two-way operation between Park Street and the Hilton Hotel.
- The closest drop off point for Market Street hotel guests is on York Street near Market Street.
Hay Street intersection work – 26 December 2016 to 23 January 2017
- tarting Boxing Day, essential utility work will be carried out where the existing Inner Wes Light Rail line will intersect with the new line at Hay Street.
From 1am Monday 26 December 2016 to 6am Saturday 31 December 2016:
- George Street between Ultimo Road and Campbell Street will be closed to all traffic. Northbound traffic on George Street will be diverted onto Pitt Street at Railway Square.
- Ultimo Road will be closed northbound at Quay Street.
- All southbound traffic on Sussex Street must turn right on Hay Street as there is no through access to Thomas Street.
- Thomas Street between Ultimo Road and Hay Street is local traffic only, access via Ultimo Road.
From 6am Monday 2 January to 5am Friday 23 January 2017, work will continue on Hay Street between George and Sussex Streets.
Buses will replace services on the Inner West Light Rail between Central and The Star from Monday 26 December 2016 to Monday 23 January 2017. Light rail services will continue to run between Convention and Dulwich Hill. For details visit transportnsw.info.
Sydney Harbour Bridge Southern Toll Plaza Upgrade – From 27 December 2016
- RMS will commence work on removing the southern toll booths on the Sydney Harbour Bridge to simplify traffic movements to the Western Distributor and northern Sydney CBD.
- From 27 December 2016 a large worksite will progressively be installed in the middle of the southern approach to the SHB, with a fixed lane configuration temporarily introduced. This means that additional city bound lanes will not be provided in the AM peak over the quieter January period.
- From 16 January, the worksite compound will be reduced and normal AM peak traffic arrangements will be reinstated.
Sydney NYE celebrations – 31 December 2016 – 1 January 2017
- Major roads will be closing in the CBD throughout the day, with all roads north of Liverpool Street closed from 11pm.
- There will also be closures of the Cahill Expressway, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Anzac Bridge city bound during and after the fireworks. Details at sydneynewyearseve.com
Bridge / Grosvenor Street intersection work – 2 January to 16 January 2017
From 10pm Monday 2 January to 5am 16 January 2017:
- There will be no northbound general traffic access on George Street between Margaret and Alfred Streets. Access to Four Seasons and Blue Anchor Lane will be via Alfred Street.
- There will be no eastbound general traffic access on Margaret Street between York Street and George Street.
- From 5am Monday to 10pm Friday, one lane westbound and one lane eastbound will be maintained through the Bridge Street / Grosvenor Street intersection.
- From 10pm Friday to 5am Monday, only one lane westbound will be maintained through the Bridge Street / Grosvenor Street intersection.
Access to the Rocks will be via Loftus and Alfred Streets, or via Harrington Street, Argyle Street, Dalgety Street, Towns Place and Hickson Road.
Wynyard Station – York Street entrance closure – From 2 January 2017
- From 2 January 2017, station access on York Street will be temporarily closed so that the York Street lobby can be refurbished and the escalators upgraded.
- Signs will be in place to direct customers and extra staff will be on hand at key times to provide assistance.
- The upgraded York Street escalators and lobby are expected to reopen from late 2017.
George Street, between Grosvenor Street and Alfred Street work – 16 January to April 2017
From 5am 16 January to approximately April 2017:
here will be no northbound general traffic access on George Street between Grosvenor and Alfred Streets. Access to Four Seasons and Blue Anchor Lane will be via Alfred Street for the first stage.
Access to the Rocks will be via Loftus and Alfred Streets, or via Harrington Street, Argyle Street, Dalgety Street, Towns Place and Hickson Road.
Australia Day celebrations – 26 January 2017
Road closures and clearways will be in place around The Rocks and Darling Harbour between 4am and 11pm. Details at www.livetraffic.com
During this period there is a large increase in arrivals and departures at the domestic and international terminals which will impact journeys to and from the Airport precinct. With changed traffic conditions in the Airport precinct and ongoing work on major road and transport projects throughout the busy summer period, traffic delays are expected. We encourage you to use public transport where possible, plan your trip ahead and allow additional travel time.
