HCC PRESIDENT RESPONSE TO NEWS.COM.AU ARTICLE 7 AUG 2017

August 7, 2017

In response to the News.com.au article ‘Why Chinese Centres of Australian Cities are Changing‘; Simon Chan, President of Haymarket Chamber of Commerce, wishes to make a number of correction and clarification to the article ‘Chinatowns in Australia are dying’ published in news.com.au. Simon Chan mentioned that a lot of Chinatowns overseas are dying and while there is concern for the long term prospect of Chinatown in Sydney, it is certainly not currently dying. There is also no negative sentiments towards the establishment of Thai Town and Korea Town which adds to the diversity of the area. The idea of the establishment of a Chinese Museum is that of Haymarket Chamber of Commerce as a community organization and not of any individual alone.  Haymarket Chamber of Commerce is also not against any potential redevelopment of the area provided consideration is given to the retention of the cultural history and the Chinese character of Chinatown.
