Saturday 14 June 2025 was a momentous day in the history of Sydney’s Chinatown. The Haymarket and Chinatown community came together to celebrate the completion of the restoration of the Dixon Street ceremonial gates and the recent heritage listing of these gates. The restoration work was funded by the City of Sydney.
Present at this colourful ceremony were Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore AO, Deputy Lord Mayor Zann Maxwell and Councillor Robert Kok. Significantly, they were joined by 6 of the 22 members of the original Dixon Street Chinese Committee instrumental in having these gates built 45 years ago in 1980. They were The Hon. Henry Tsang OAM, Mr King Fong OAM, Mr Arthur Yip, Mr Tony Chan, Mr Jensen Liu and Mr Stanley Yee. The Hon. Henry Tsang also played an important advisory role in the current restoration project including in the commissioning of 4 new lions as special guardians of the gates (two northern lions on the Goulburn St end and two southern lions on the Hay St end, all carved out of granite).
Our Chamber president, Vincent Lim, was also present at this historic event along with many other members of our Chamber and the Haymarket and Chinatown community. The heritage listing of these gates means that many generations to come will be able to enjoy them.
We are all grateful to the City of Sydney under the leadership of Lord Mayor Clover Moore AO for funding the restoration project and for supporting the gates’ heritage listing.
