November 1, 2021
The Chamber is pleased to host an End of Year Celebration event onSunday 19 December from noon-2.30pm at Dixon Street Mall outside of Harbour Plaza. There will be street performers as part of the event, which is aimed at reinvigorating Chinatown and the surrounding Haymarket area.
We have organised a fantastic line-up of performers for the event, including pop artist Zhuli, Vocal Duo with Larry Ng & Yanping Zhu, the Malasoul dance group, Xo Music band and classical Chinese music group Huaxia Chinese Music Society.
Thank you to the City of Sydney for supporting this event, and please head down to Chinatown on the day!
George St South Pedestrianisation project
The City of Sydney is continuing its work on extending the pedestrian boulevard of George Street, Sydney from Bathurst Street to Railway Square. Construction has now reached Chinatown, especially from Hay Street onwards (near the light rail tracks).
The estimated construction period for the overall project is March 2021 to Mid 2022. The Chamber will liaise with the Council to explore ways to speed up the construction process.
International borders open
From 1 December, fully vaccinated eligible visa holders will be able to travel to and from Australia without a travel exemption. Previously, only Australian citizens, permanent residents, and a very small group of visa holders were able to travel without obtaining an exemption.
For businesses and universities hit with the worker shortage and economic downturn, the reopening of our international borders is a welcome step on the path to recovery. The Australian government estimates around 200,000 temporary visa holders to take advantage of the relaxed travel restrictions.
The Chamber welcomes this news as it will provide welcome relief to businesses in Haymarket.
