Congratulations to the Museum of Chinese in Australia (MOCA) on its official opening by the Hon. Anthony Albanese MP, Prime Minister of Australia, and the Rt Hon. Clover Moore AO, Lord Mayor of Sydney, on Sunday, 22 February 2026.
The opening marks a significant milestone in the recognition of Chinese Australian history and culture within Australia’s public cultural landscape. The Museum is now opened to the public, with an exhibition on the ground floor showcasing some of the most prominent and fascinating Chinese Australian merchant families who had helped lay the foundations for the modern-day success story that is our Haymarket precinct. These include families such as the Mar family who dominated the banana trade in the early 20th century before going on to build modern departmental stores in Shanghai. Works on the upper floors of the Museum are continuing, and these are expected to be completed shortly.
MOCA also held a Chinese New Year celebration for the community on 1 March 2026 at which Museum chair, Daphne Lowe Kelley, thanked everyone from the community for their wholehearted support including many who had made financial contributions to the Museum as Friends of MOCA.
The Museum is located at 744 George St, Haymarket, and is open to the public from 10.30 am – 4.30 pm, Tuesday – Friday.
