CHINATOWN GATES PROPOSED HERTIAGE STATUS

April 12, 2020

GOOD NEWS

HCC has sought for the City of Sydney to recognise the history and culture of Chinatown. The famous iconic Dixon Street archways are not currently listed as local heritage items on Sydney Local Environmental Plan 2012 or on the State Heritage Register.

The City is currently planning a heritage study for Chinatown, which would include assessing the archways for listing in the context of Chinatown as a whole. An initial assessment with a study is in progress and City of Sydney Councillor Linda Scott leading the initiative by putting it forward at the City of Sydney council meeting last week.

Following this initial process the City of Sydney will exhibit the Chinatown heritage listings  for community consultation before Council approval.  We will keep you posted.
