The ‘Art of War’, regarded as a powerful manual for ambitious, innovative, and savvy small business owners and cited as essential reading for business leaders. According to Sun Tzu there are five essentials for victory namely;

  • He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight.
  • He will win who knows how to handle both superior and inferior forces.
  • He will win whose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks.
  • He will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared.
  • He will win who has military capacity and is not interfered with by the sovereign.”

These five essentials have interpreted for SMEs by American business owner and author Becky Sheetz-Runkle in her book outlining 5 key ‘Art of War’ strategies for SMEs. These points include;

  • The power of alliances, small businesses can build strong partnerships which gathers strength

  • Act quickly and at the right time’
  • Keep adversaries in the dark, as the unexpected is a powerful weapon. SMEs should always identify opportunities and advantages their opponents have not.
